What You'll Learn
Combine everything from the previous lessons —
notes, breath control, tonguing — to play your
first complete tune: "Twinkle Twinkle Little
Star."
The Tune: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
This nursery rhyme only uses the notes B, A, and
G. You already know all of them.
Step 1: Say the Notes
Read the tab out loud rhythmically. Clap or tap
along with the beat. Each letter gets one tap,
dashes get one tap (held).
Rhythm pattern:
ta ta ta ta ta ta ta - (7 notes
+ 1 hold per line)
Step 2: Play Line by Line
Play the first line slowly. Don't worry about
speed. Focus on clean notes and steady rhythm.
Repeat until you can play it without mistakes,
then move to the next line.
Step 3: Put It Together
Play all three lines in sequence. The first and
third lines are identical — this is a common
pattern in music (ABA form).
Adding Expression
Once you can play the notes correctly, try:
-
Tongue only the first note of each line.
-
Add a slight crescendo (get
louder) on the repeated section.
-
Hold the final note a little longer for a
natural ending.
Practice Tips
-
Use a metronome at 40 BPM. Play one note per
tick.
-
If you make a mistake, stop, breathe, and
replay from the beginning of the line.
-
Record yourself and compare to a recording —
listen for differences in timing and tone.
Common Mistakes
-
Rushing the held note —
count the dash as a full beat. Don't cut it
short.
-
Pausing between lines — the
rhythm should flow continuously. Keep your
foot tapping through the rests.
