Speed & Agility

Lesson 2 of 6 · Advanced

What You'll Learn

Build finger speed and agility through systematic exercises. Speed is not about forcing fast fingers — it's about relaxed, efficient movements that happen to be fast.

The Golden Rule of Speed

Speed is a side effect of relaxation and accuracy. If you're tense, you'll never be fast. If you're inaccurate, speed will amplify your mistakes.

Always start slow, play perfectly, then increase speed incrementally.

Exercise 1: Finger Independence

Hold G (●●● ●○○). Lift and replace each finger individually while continuing to blow:

Hold G. Lift hole 1 - replace. Lift hole 2 - replace. Lift hole 3 - replace.
Hole 4 - replace. Hole 5 - replace. Hole 6 - replace.

Each finger should move independently without disturbing the others.

Exercise 2: Alternating Notes

Rapidly alternate between two notes with wide finger spacing:

B - G - B - G - B - G - B - G - | (one octave jump)
B - G - B - G - B - G - B - G - |
B - G - B - G - B - G - B - G - |
B - G - B - G - B - G - B - G - |

Start at 60 BPM (eighth notes), move to 80, 100, 120.

Exercise 3: Scale Runs

Play the G major scale in eighth notes, then sixteenth notes:

G A B C D E F# G | G F# E D C B A G | (eighth notes at 80 BPM)
G A B C D E F# G | G F# E D C B A G | (sixteenth notes at 60 BPM)
G A B C D E F# G | G F# E D C B A G |
G A B C D E F# G | G F# E D C B A G |

Exercise 4: Ornament Sequences

Play cuts on every note of a descending scale:

G (cut) F# (cut) E (cut) D (cut) C (cut) B (cut) A (cut) G (cut) |
G (cut) F# (cut) E (cut) D (cut) C (cut) B (cut) A (cut) G (cut) |

Practice Tips

  • Use a metronome religiously. Increase by only 5 BPM at a time.
  • If you can't play cleanly at a tempo, slow down until you can.
  • Practice speed in short bursts: 30 seconds of maximum effort, then rest.
  • Keep your hands warm before practice — cold fingers are slow fingers.

Common Mistakes

  • Gripping tighter as speed increases — this slows you down. Consciously relax your grip.
  • Lifting fingers too high — keep finger movements minimal. Half a centimeter off the hole is enough.
  • Rushing at tempo — if you're ahead of the metronome, you've lost control. Slow down.
